Ways to keep your back healthy

Your back is the kind of thing that you won't pay much attention to until it starts to hurt. By keeping your back strong and healthy it's possible to avoid problems further down the line. There are a few steps you can take to keep it in tip top shape.

Strengthen and Maintain

Keeping your weight under control can help your health and your back in a big way. Any extra weight on your body will have an effect on your joints and back . You want your back to have as little extra weight to lift as possible so that it is under less strain.

By strengthening the abdominal muscles it's possible to strengthen the core of the body including the back. It is also worth strengthening the leg muscles as the fitter your body is the better chance you have of staying in shape. Some great ways of strengthening the bodys abdominal and leg areas are swimming and running among other things. If you have a bad back then its important to take part in exercise that doesn't put additional strain on the back muscles. Swimming is a suitable choice as the body is given more support while in the water.

Damage Limitation

If you have a strong and healthy back you are less likely to be prone to as many twinges and pulls as someone with a weak back would be. It is still a good idea no matter how strong your back is to lift heavy items correctly. When lifting make sure to stand parallel to the object and bend your knees and not your back. This way the pressure is exerted on the leg muscles and not the back.

Posture is another very important thing to maintain. Adopting a good posture and avoiding slouching will allow the back muscles and ligaments to work as they should and will help you avoid any unnecessary injuries.

Making yourself comfortable

As we spend a large portion of our lives sleeping it's important to have a suitable mattress that supports the back sufficiently. Not every mattress is the same so it's important to find one that suits your needs.

Stress is something that is hard to get rid of completely from your life but try to minimise the stress you put yourself under as it makes your muscles contract and can give your back something to complain about.
